MG MGF Technical - Gear selector woe`s

Hi all

Has anyone had one of the Slick Shift Kits fitted and how much difference did you find with it ? also did it improve the reverse selection . the gear selection on our 98 mgf is now driving the missus to ditraction !!!So I must do something

Hi, I had the Mike Satur one fitted and yes it defo makes a difference in that you can whip between the gears at a fraction of the time. Very crisp, very smooth, very worthwhile IMO!!

I fitted a B&G Quick shift and would not recomend it. The best thing I next fitted was there Bell Crank Assembly and this transformed the gear change.
I have driven an F with a Mike Satur Slickshift and that is the bees knees. Go for it.

Make sure the connections at the gearbox end of the cables are OK - I had one work loose and the first thing I noticed was the gear lever moving further to get reverse. There's a counterweight at the bottom of the gearstick which then hit the side of the tunnel with a loud clang. New bellcrank and joints restored peace & quiet + decent gear selection. Take care to get the retaining clips securely fixed. I had one come out and I couldn't get 5th or reverse - rather awkward!

Have fitted Mike Satur shift to our car. Much more precise than std change, but it is also heavier as it does not have the counterbalance weight that is there on the stad change. I would recommend though.

The graunching when trying to find reverse is a feature of the gear linkage. Advice I received from dealer when car was new was to let engine warm up so that revs dropped to 850rpm, then feel very deliberately for the reverse gate. The only sure way I found was to fit a slick shift, which took all the slack out of the linkage.

drop into 4th, then reverse, to avoid the crunching of gears.
There is some reason for this working, i am sure someone will have a techy explanation for it.
Charles Dundas

Charles is correct,
I have a friend that used to be a "salesman" for MG Rover before their demise and he advised my father in law that the easiest way to avoid reverse gear selection "CRUNCHING" was to first select 4th then go straight into reverse, That was on a "T reg" MGF and years later i have the same prob with a 53 TF and the cure is the same.

Why the boffings at MG Rover would work that out instead of curing the problem is beyond me but
sneaking up on it is the apparent answer.
